This brief report by VIS reviews Greece’s current status, opportunities, and challenges in deploying hydrogen to meet its decarbonization goals. While hydrogen use is currently limited and mostly grey, interest in green hydrogen—produced from renewable electricity—is growing. Hydrogen is seen as essential for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as transport, industry, and power. Although guided by EU policies, Greece’s NECP lacks clear hydrogen targets. Key opportunities include replacing lignite in power generation and supporting cleaner transport and industrial processes. Projects like White Dragon and Green HIPo have joined the EU’s IPCEI framework, and Greece is participating in the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative. However, progress is hindered by the lack of a national strategy, unclear regulations, and limited infrastructure. Establishing a supportive policy and regulatory environment will be crucial to realizing hydrogen’s potential. The full report is available at the link below.
